I already explained to you in another video how black metal was originally a musical revolt against trendy death metal. And already in 1992, black metal had become a new trend. And bands like the Dark Throne and Burzum became fairly popular, you know, relatively speaking. It was an underground scene. And other bands started to play the same style of music. In 1993, my little PR stunt made black metal incredibly well known overnight like that. And all sorts of a former death metal and rock and heavy metal bands in Norway started to play black metal because of it. But as you know, the original purpose was not to play trendy music, not to do with something that others did. So how did I react to that? Well, let's find out. I couldn't care less about that black metal term. I didn't invent it and never wanted it, never even liked it. And I didn't care about, you know, a new trend and didn't want to be a part of it. So I made an anti black metal album. You know that as a Filosofem. Yeah. That was not made as a black metal album. It was made as an anti black metal album. And you can tell from the, you know, just look at the aesthetics. There's nothing black metal about it. And the music completely different from anything else I've done before. Everything was different. It was original. It was not what had by then become a separate genre of music called black metal. And in fact it was the same thing about the "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" aesthetics. There's nothing black metal about it, save perhaps the fact that it is black and white. But we did that for economic reasons originally. But the mainstream media had already written so much about this. And I had, because of that interview, become so linked to black metal that they didn't want anything to do with my little anti black metal revolt. So regardless of what I did, they describe Burzum as black metal. Even the synthesizer albums that are made in prison, you know,"Dauði Baldrs" and "Hliðskjálf", they were put in the black metal category. There are no black metal aesthetics. It's not even metal. And we continue onwards. The post prison albums: "Belus" nothing black metal about it. "Fallen" nothing black metal about it. "Umskiptar" nothing black metal about it. And so forth. Yet everyone think of all these albums, except perhaps the synth albums, as black metal. And there's nothing I can do about it it seems. I'm stuck with that label whether I like it or not. And at this point in time, I don't really care. Call it black metal if you want to, I don't care. But I have no interest in black metal. I never listen to the music that you think of as black metal. Never liked the aesthetics. And I never paid any attention to the post 1993 black metal scene. So when people here on TikTok ask me about different black metal bands or different black metal musicians. 99% of the time I have no idea what they're talking about and never heard about them. And I left that scene in 1993 around April, I would say. And this also is a little bit funny, because when you understand that, you will also understand how ridiculous the claim that there was a power struggle in the scene and that this has anything to do with the demise of Euronymous. I wasn't a part of the scene, didn't want anything to do with it. So just like with all the other claims, they are either projections or misinformation or slander or plain straightforward lies. So no, I don't STILL listen to black metal. I still DON'T listen to black metal and I don't want to change that. So. I never heard Dissection. I have never heard Hades. I have never heard anything by Emperor. I have never heard anything post 1993 by Immortal. I have never heard posts 1993 Mayhem.[1] I have never heard anything post 1993 Darkthrone except "Panzerfaust" because I wrote the lyrics for half the album. And I also heard that they had changed style, so I heard one of their tracks. Some sort of punk metal stuff. Not interested. Yeah, I left that scene in 1993 around April and I never looked back. Thank you for watching.
- With one exception. I saw one Immortal video on YT once.
