I was not the first to use tremolo picking in metal music, but I was the first to use tremolo picking in combination with chords. And I'm going to show you how much of a difference that makes. First without chords, okay? And then you use chords.[1] And as you can tell, the difference is significant. And the point here is to have the tones hanging. As you can tell, it makes a huge difference. And I think that is one of the things that made Burzum different from other bands at the time. And I never felt that I played metal music. It is metal music, of course, but to me it felt as if I played classical music the way others play metal music. Or classical music with metal instruments. And mind you, this makes sense because I didn't grow up with metal music. I grew up with Tchaikovsky. And I didn't make music for concerts. I made it for you to listen to it.[2] And when I went to the studio, I organized it so that when you listen to the music, it doesn't sound as if you're listening to a band. It sounds as if you are sitting behind the drum kit. And the point of that was to enable you to get more into the music[3] personally, on an individual level. Because it feels somehow like you are playing it.

  3. You are not listening to a band. You ARE the band.
