When I was young, I made music because I had nothing better to do. I no longer had anyone to play role play games with because they started to give priority to their formal education. And I didn't want to participate in the degeneracy of other teens at the time. So I just play the guitar because I had nothing better to do. But how am I making music today? Let's find out.
Of course, you just make new riffs. And you make music by just playing, right? And you try new things, and sometimes you come up with something good. But one of the main and most effective methods I had to make new riffs in the past was to not memorize the riffs that I made, even though they were really good. And this meant that when I returned to playing the guitar the next time, and I try to remember what did I play, I, quite often, before I rediscovered the original riff, if I did, I made several other riffs that were similar and therefore, you know, kind of fit well together with the original riff.
Or indeed, I made a new riff that I used for another song. For example, the main riff in "Spell of Destruction" is basically the original riff for yes U did. The main riff in Jesu Død, it's the same riff, it's just played in a different way. And if you look at the last four, Burzum NEW tracks like Elfland, The Mound of Fire and so forth, they are made in the same way. And you could say that I have ripped off myself because I played my own music, and based on that, I made something similar. So these four newest tracks are actually made in the exact same way that I made my first few albums. And they even have the same basic riffs from back then as the starting point.
And back in the late 80s and early 90s, I had nothing better to do, so I had plenty of time to make music. And nowadays I have so many obligations that I don't really play the guitar normally. I don't rehearse at all. And I only make music in bursts, you could say. I sit down and I work for one or two weeks on music, and I make music in that period. And mind you, I don't want to play the guitars normally. I think it's boring to just sit and play and rehearse. So I only play the guitars when I really have something I want to make. When I'm bursting with creativity, so to speak.
