The roots of Burzum don't go back to any type of metal music or even classical music. The roots of Burzum goes back to this.

The roots of Burzum
Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul
This is what I was occupied with. This is what inspired me when I started playing music. And I started playing music mainly because I had nothing better to do.

The whole concept around Burzum was based on role-playing games. It was a fantasy concept. It was a concept based on escapism.
Fantasy is escapist, that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape? If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!
- J.R.R. Tolkien
In this modern world we are in a mental prison and it is our duty to escape. I did not want to become a part of the system, another brick in the wall. I by all means did not want to become a tax payer and contribute to the downfall of my own people and culture and traditions. Because that is what they use our tax money for. To destroy us and everything that we hold dear. The very foundations of our peoples.

And I had nothing better to do than play the guitars and make music and prepare for the inevitable doom. So that's the origin of Burzum. That's the cause of Burzum. That's the reason why Burzum came to be. Thank you for watching.
